We are pleased to announce the 2011 Entrepreneur Youth Challenge top award winners. Elle McGlockin representing her business Over-Joyed and the Mermaid Tears team of Heavyn Olea and Chantell Schultz were the winners of two $1,500 top prizes for this year’s event. Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe was the lead sponsor making these cash awards possible.

Elle McGlockin’s business plan for Over-Joyed focused on establishing a bakery and café that would be located in the Seattle-area and would provide quality and tasteful beverages and pastries, as well as baking/cooking classes taught by individuals well educated in food industry. Over-Joyed would offer quality products, a welcoming environment and top-notch customer service.

Mermaid Tears is a business developed by Heavyn Olea and Chantell Schultz. This business would produce custom jewelry made from completely natural sea glass. The name of this business is derived from the notion that sea glass is said to be the tears of a mermaid. Wearing this jewelry is meant to provoke the feeling that customer is wearing a part of the ocean. The artists will utilize naturally shaped and unpolished glass in their creations to preserve the uniqueness.

Additional contributions from the First Federal Community Dividend Program, ONE Group Consulting, and Necessities and Temptations ensured that all four finalist teams would receive prizes. Two runner-up prizes were awarded for $200. Every competitor also received a $25 gift certificate from Necessities and Temptations.

The runner-up awards went to team T.A.P. Tactical Air soft and Paintball. Tim Acheson, Coty Apperson, Lyle Baum and Parker Brye will share their award for their business that would provide a convenient location and safe environment for air soft and paintball matches. In addition to the location for matches, T.A.P. will provide all the necessities that air soft and paintball require for one to experience the sport to its full potential. That includes the sale of ammo, gear, along with food and beverage.

KONO Athletics lead by A.J. Konopaski also received a runner-up award. KONO Athletics lives by the motto “community first.” It’s mission is to provide a safe, focused and well-rounded sports complex that promotes healthy lifestyles, acceptance of diversified athletic abilities, and a strong community. KONO Athletics is an indoor tennis/soccer facility utilizing the “Tennis Bubble” donated by the City of Port Angeles and would operate in a partnership with Port Angeles School District.

We congratulate all the competitors who participated in this year’s competition!!
